1 A section of the spiral staircase

Originally, there was a spiral staircase between the second floor and the top level. Gustave Eiffel used these stairs to get to his top floor office. Considered obsolete, the staircase was dismantled in 1983. Twenty segments were sold at a very successful international auction. The segment dispalyed on the first floor measures 4.3-meters high.

2 The original hydraulic pump-

It supplied water to the machinery of the old elevator, which ran from the second floor to the top.

3 FerOscope -

In the center of a transparent bubble, mounted on one of the Tower’s beams, interactive videos, “video glasses” and light shows take you on a discovery of the technical means used to build the monument, as well as the work involved in protecting the iron with paint.

The different colors of the Tower since its construction are visible inside.

If you raise your eyes, you can see wax steeple painters perched on a beam, replicas of the workers who paint the Tower every seven years.

4 Observatory of Tower Top Movement-

An original and unique system that monitors, with a laser beam in real time, the oscillation of the top of the Tower due to the effects of the wind and temperature. A computer linked to sensors calculates these movements. A computer-rendered film in seven languages presents the construction of the Tower, ” Mister Eiffel’s Masterpiece ” (3min30sec).

The Elevator Machinery in Use Since 1899

Located underground, the massive hydraulic elevator machinery designed by Gustave Eiffel that has since been restored and computerized is still in use today.

However, access to this machinery is closed to the public.

Gustave Eiffel carved by Bourdelle In 1929, on the initiative of the Ferrié General a subscription was open for the realization of a bust of Gustave Eiffel.

This monument was carried out with the foot of the Tower Eiffel, Créé by the sculptor Antoine Bourdelle assisted of the architects Auguste Perret and André Granet, the bust was installed with the foot of the Eiffel Tower.

On May 2 the sculpture was inaugurated by the Secretary of State at the postal and telecommunications authorities in the presence of many scientific personalities and of the Eiffel family.

The golden night lighting has adorned the Tower since December 31, 1985. It is composed of 335 spotlights placed so as to highlight the structure of the monument. The beacon and the glittering lights arrived in celebration of the new millennium, December 31, 1999. The beacon’s two beams of light can travel up to 80 kilometers; it is composed of four automatically-operated spotlights. As for the glimmering lights, 20,000 light bulbs are necessary; that is to say, 5,000 per façade.

If you've ever been into a travel agents offering holidays to Turkey then you've probably seen pictures of Ölüdeniz. Second only to the Istanbul skyline, the lagoon features on a multitude of posters, postcards and brochure pages. It's not surprising as the characteristic shape of the coastline here has resulted in a unique bit of beach. It actually is gorgeous and the inevitable development of the little village ( I think there was one here once ) has been fairly restrained. A couple of years ago there were more building sites than sun loungers within 10 km of the lagoon but everything seems to be settling down now and it's still a very nice place to be.

Here's a photo I took from the front seat of a tandem paraglider, more on that later. The colours don't look real and it gets even crazier when you're there. 'The gem of the Turquoise Coast'? It's as close to Turquoise as I've ever seen. Practicalities? A range of places to stay, drink and eat. Nothing really top end here, which doesn't do the place any harm. The usual crowd is a mix of independent travellers and package folk who've come for a good time. It has to be said that it's busy as hell in the summer. That's not necessarily a bad thing. A crowd can make for a good time and the beaches, both the free expanse in front of the town and the nearly free bit around the lagoon have a fairly high capacity. You can swim from May onwards with little hardship but take some thongs 'cos it's a little pebbly in places. You might find accommodation a little tricky during high season but if your packaging it, as most people here are, then you're sorted and there are enough low end rooms and camp sites to make it feasible to come through on a whim.

You wont find the opportunities for clubbing that are available in Bodrum and Marmaris but you can always do that at home.

This area of Turkey has loads of stuff to see and do and it's a shame not to get off the beach. The paraglide has to be one of the biggest pulls and it's a bit special.

To get to Oludeniz you'll need to get to Fethiye, that's fairly easy from most cities and towns in Turkey. If your travelling the south coast then you'll find services west from Kas and east from Marmaris and Dalyan. The bus station in Fethiye is served by Pamukkale, Metro and Kamil Koc, all reputable companies who'll probably get you there in one piece.

Once in Fethiye Oludeniz is no problem. If you walk out of the bus station through the entrance the bus used to get in you can flag down a Dolmus or minibus that will get you there for a minimal outlay, just make sure you pay what everybody else does. Not usually a problem and the tariff is displayed in each vehicle.

Planes

If you're flying into Dalaman without the aid of a tour rep to get you where you're going you'll need to get from the airport to the Dalaman bus station but from then on its a little bus all the way. No big hassles.

1. Day Boarding the yacht in Bodrum. Welcome drink and information about the yacht and the tour program, overnight in the harbor of Bodrum or in a near bay.

2. Day Departure after breakfast. With a cruise of 3-4 hours, we arrive at Çati, a lovely bay surrounded with pine trees on the south coast of the gulf. Dinner and overnight here in the region of "Seven Islands".

3. Day After breakfast we will give a stop in the Küfre bay, we suggest you a short walk through the storax (liquidambar) forest. In the afternoon we will arrive at Löngöz for dinner and overnight.

4. Day Today we will visit the Island Cleopatra (Cedreae). On the west of the island, a wonderful little beach is situated. It's said that the sand of this beach was brought by Antonious for Cleopatra from the desert of North Africa. Late in the afternoon, we leave the island to anchor in Karacasögüt. (This small village is only 30 km from Marmaris and you have the opportunity to go there by taxi or a small bus.)

5. Day Leaving Karacasögüt, we arrive after short cruise Tuzla (Saline) bay. A small creek on the west side of this bay is called Ingiliz Limani (English Harbor). This name is derived from the Second World War, where English torpedo boats hid from the German battle ships. Dinner and overnight in one of the lovely bays here around.

6. Day Leaving English Harbor, we cruise to the northern side of the Gulf to Akbük. Here we will spend some hours for lunch and swimming. In the afternoon, we continue our trip to Cökertme Bay (2 hours) for overnight.

7. Day Today we cruise back to Bodrum. After swimming stops by Kisebükü and / or Çiftlik, we will sail to the harbor of Bodrum or in a near bay for last dinner and overnight.

8. Day Disembarking in Bodrum after breakfast.

Avanos (population 12,000), on the banks of the Kizilirmak River in Cappadocia (Central Anatolia), is all about pottery-making.

Though not as well known as Ürgüp, Göreme, or Uçhisar, Avanos has several good small hotels and restaurants, as well as plenty of shops.

The red clay from the riverbanks is excellent for traditional household pottery as well as industrial uses such as building blocks and roof tiles.

You can see pottery being made, and even take a pottery-making class and make some yourself.

Avanos's artisans also carve alabaster, the light-colored, translucent stone.

The Sari Han (Yellow Caravanserai), a caravanserai built by the Selcuk Turks, is out in the country 6 km (4 mi) east of Avanos.

Unless you're a good walker, hire a taxi to get there as there's little hitching traffic on the road to Sari Han.

Avanos is 17 km (11 mi, 25 minutes) NE of Nevsehir, 8 km (5 miles) N of Göreme, 13 km (8.1 mi) NW of Ürgüp. and 70 km (44 miles) W of Kayseri (map).

It's not quite as central as Ürgüp or Göreme to use as a base for your visit, but it's a bit less touristy, and still has a small selection of hotels and restaurants.

Fethiye is founded at the lower slopes of the mountain Mendos, at the bank of the gulf which has taken its name from it and on the old Telmessos. This is why the ruins have remained under this nice county. Fethiye constitutes the center of the area of West Lykia tours because of many hotels, the small bays which are more beautiful than each other and well-developed yacht tourism. It is possible to reach

Fethiye, which is 50 km far away to the Dalaman Airport, by Mugla Denizli and Antalya highways or by sea. People who go Fethiye which hugs the history, nature and the sea can visit some antique places such as Kadyanda, Pinara, Tlos, Sidyma, Xanthos, Letoon and Patara easily. It is possible to stay and benefit from the sea for 9 months here because of the heat that does not fall under 16 degrees. There are such beauties that it is impossible to explain them with a few words. An eternal blue world is seen after a road of 14 kilometers continues by curling between pine tree forests at the point of downward slope while you believe that the green of the high mountains will never end. With 'its turquoise-colored sea and long beach the Belcegiz Bay, which protects Ölüdeniz with all strength, welcomes you.

Gobun bay, is placed in the south-western coast of the Fethiye Gulf, and is a very calm bay with the crystal clear water, 7-10m depth, and the quietness of a lake; just like all the other bays in the Fethiye Gulf. There is also a small cafe - restaurant that is run by a local family, and the bay is one of the certain places where the sailors stop for an overnight.

Gobun has another alternative called the Cavy Bay, which is just next to the Gobun Bay. Here is also a fascinating place with its pure waters, and calm sea, which will charm everyone who sees. On the shore, there is a small cave in the rocks, and a stairway leading the cave the strange thing is both of them are natural. So, you can now understand why they called here the Cavy Bay.

Cleopatra's Baths, is a large bay full of lots of pine trees, and has a dark blue sea which goes to light blue, as you reach the shore. In the south - western part of the bay, there are some ruins, which came down because of the earthquakes in Fethiye. According to the myth, in one of the visits of Cleopatra to Anatolian coasts, her close friends decided to build a Roman Bath for Cleopatra as a present. Because, they found a hot water spring in this part of the bay Flat Islands are a group of islands so close to each other, located just at the opposite of the Gocek town.

The property here is the salty lake in the middle of the long sandy part of the biggest island in the group. Here is also a charming place with the clear, dark blue, and very deep waters.

But there's a passing from the biggest island to the smallest, which you can easily walk (1.5m depth). On the biggest island, further to the north, there's a long, sandy beach leading to the lake. On the shore, there are two families selling pancakes and pastries, which come every morning from the Gocek town, and leave in the evening.

And there's a big boat used as a restaurant on this island. Kaya Köy is a ghost village located about 18 km/ 11 miles in the south of Fethiye near Hisarönü. The village (ancient Karmylassos) was deserted in 1925 by its Greek inhabitants after the great exchange of population following the establishment of the Turkish Republic.

The Turkish people who came from Greece didn't get used to the houses, and they built new houses in the lowland, so that the village was abandoned by both Greeks and Turks in a few years time. The church of the village, which is thought to have been built in the 17th century, was restored in 1888. The frescoes were covered by the Turkish people who used the building as a mosque during some time.

Calis is situated 5km by road from the centre of Fethiye and is one of the most striking residential and recreational centres in the region. 'A place to watch sunsets' is how some visitors to the area describe Calis and the views across the bay are certainly stunning, especially as the day draws to a close.

Çalis is a small but growing resort that appeals to people who like to combine sun, sand and sea with a bit of local colour. It is set on an inlet protected by 12 islands forming a natural harbour shared by fishing boats, yachts and water taxis. The two mile sand and shingle beach at Çalis is ideal for families with children and there are many water sports and other activities on offer. Further down from Çalis, Kargi, with its beautiful beach and incense trees, is a newly developing resort with a number of hotels and holiday villages.

Çalis has a post office, pharmacies, shops, restaurants, bars and many small markets for your day to day needs. For supermarket shopping you will need to go into Fethiye where you have a choice of two - Migros on the outskirts of town and Gima in the town centre.

Dolmus buses and boats link Çalis to Fethiye and run daily between 09:00 and 23.30 at 20min intervals during the summer. The dolmus station in Fethiye is located behind the white mosque on the main street. Should you wish to take a taxi from Fethiye to Çalis it should cost you no more than 15 million TL on the meter (about £6.50).

If there is no meter, be sure to agree a price with the driver before getting into the vehicle, as there are a few around who will try to take advantage of tourists.

As Çalis is fairly small there are no banking facilities, however, it does have an ATM machine and almost all the hotels and shops in the area offer exchange facilities. All these services can also be found along the main street in the centre of Fethiye.

In Fethiye there are two private hospitals for doctors services and emergencies - Letoon Hospital and Esnaf Hospital. The nearer of the two is Esnaf Hospital, which is well sign posted and is located just off the harbour front in the Tuzla area of town. Standards in this hospital are extremely high and the service is on par with European private hospitals.

Ovacik-Fethiye

Ovacik is situated in the hills below the imposing 6,000ft mountain Babadag, along the road that runs between Fethiye (10km) and the world famous resort of Ölüdeniz (6km). In the summer, the village has the look and feel of a genuine holiday centre with many small hotels, bars and restaurants feeding the area, whilst in the winter months Ovacik is very quiet and peaceful. Even during the peak season when there are plenty of tourists around, Ovacik never really seems that busy and the tranquil and beautiful countryside is only ever a two-minute walk away.

Cool breezes and stunning mountain & forest views surround the valley in which the village is located.

Ovacik has many small markets for your day to day needs and Hisarönü has a post office, pharmacies, shops, restaurants,clubs and bars. For supermarket shopping you will need to go into Fethiye where you have a choice of two - Migros on the outskirts of town and Gima in the town centre.

Local dolmus services run at regular intervals to and from Fethiye and Ölüdeniz. The dolmus station in Fethiye is located behind the white mosque on the main street and from Ölüdeniz the buses run from the beach front. Should you wish to take a taxi from Fethiye to Ovacik it should cost you no more than 15 million TL on the meter (less than ₤10). If there is no meter, be sure to agree a price with the driver before getting into the vehicle, as there are a few around who will try to take advantage of tourists.

As Ovacik is fairly small, there are no banking facilities in the village itself, however, neighbouring Hisarönü has an ATM machine and almost all the hotels and shops in the area offer exchange facilities. All these services can also be found along the main street in the centre of Fethiye.

Hisarönü has a small private hospital that is linked with the Esnaf Hospital in Fethiye, and has a medical centre opposite for doctors services that is open late into the night during the season.

Uzumlu-Fethiye

15 kilometres northeast of Fethiye, is the town of Uzumlu that lies at the skirts of Cadianda, the antique city of Lykia, old Anatolian houses made of wood and stone queue up in aline with their peaceful courtyards, forming the cute streets of this interesting town. While walking along these streets, hearing those mysterious and persevering sounds going 'tinnn' will make one wonder. In this warm atmosphere where authentic pastoral life prevails, the women of Uzumlu have been giving shape to their joy, patience and sorrow in the form of hand-woven fabric for a hundred, maybe a thousand years with the same looms and the same traditional methods.

What comes into the palm of women of every age from fifteen to eighty-five as cotton or silk thread, leaves it as 'dastar', the specific fabric of Uzumtu. Between the hands that flutter upon the loom, something like a magical spell happens. The sound heard in the street is the song of the thread that is the hero of this magic.

In Uzumlu, nearly every home has a loom like an inventory article, one that is a legacy of the former generations, standing tall in the small room where it has been crammed in with same difficulty. The resounding ring of the thread and the movement of the foot pedal going back and forth mixes into the daily routines of the home like the children' s plays and the smell of cooking meal.

Cadianda which is established on a hill at southeastern of Üzümlü Area at a distance of 24 km to Fethiye. It was on Kaunos - Araxa road in Archaic Period. A part of the city wall that surrounded the city, rock graves and inscriptions written in Likia language are the ruins in Kadyanda ruin place that can be dated to the earliest period. In addition to these, Hellenistic period theater that has also been used in the Roman period after a repair, the bath, the runway, agora, the ruins of the temple, that could not be determined to belong to which God and intense civil construction traces show that Kadyanda ruin place is a full city that has been subject to settlement in the Archaic Period.

Calis-Fethiye

Çalis is a small but growing resort that appeals to people who like to combine sun, sand and sea with a bit of local colour. It is set on an inlet protected by 12 islands forming a natural harbour shared by fishing boats, yachts and water taxis. The two mile sand and shingle beach at Çalis is ideal for families with children and there are many water sports and other activities on offer. Further down from Çalis, Kargi, with its beautiful beach and incense trees, is a newly developing resort with a number of hotels and holiday villages.

Çalis has a post office, pharmacies, shops, restaurants, bars and many small markets for your day to day needs. For supermarket shopping you will need to go into Fethiye where you have a choice of two - Migros on the outskirts of town and Gima in the town centre.

Dolmus buses and boats link Çalis to Fethiye and run daily between 09:00 and 23.30 at 20min intervals during the summer. The dolmus station in Fethiye is located behind the white mosque on the main street. Should you wish to take a taxi from Fethiye to Çalis it should cost you no more than 15 million TL on the meter (about ₤6.50). If there is no meter, be sure to agree a price with the driver before getting into the vehicle, as there are a few around who will try to take advantage of tourists.

As Çalis is fairly small there are no banking facilities, however, it does have an ATM machine and almost all the hotels and shops in the area offer exchange facilities. All these services can also be found along the main street in the centre of Fethiye.

In Fethiye there are two private hospitals for doctors services and emergencies – Letoon Hospital and Esnaf Hospital. The nearer of the two is Esnaf Hospital, which is well sign posted and is located just off the harbour front in the Tuzla area of town. Standards in this hospital are extremely high and the service is on par with European private hospitals.

Hisaronu-Fethiye

Hisarönü is next to Ovacik and is a mini-resort perched on a mountain plateau, overlooking the famous Ölüdeniz lagoon. Lively and bright, the resort is packed with gift shops, nightclubs and the resort's speciality - restaurants catering for every taste! Hisaronu really comes alive after dark as visitors and locals head for the clubs, bars or linger over a meal, enjoying the cool mountain air. Easy transportation to Fethiye and Ölüdeniz from Hisarönü & Ovacik is provided by dolmus, which takes just 5 min to Ölüdeniz and 20 min to Fethiye.

Ayvalik is a small quiet seaside resort, fishing town and place where olive oil and soap are made. Ayvalik has thankfully been spared the over-development that has been visited upon other areas in Turkey.

The small town still has close links to their Greek neighbors as it was still inhabited by Greeks until after WWI. There are still churches here, like the Taksiyarhis Church and it is a pleasure to walk the narrow cobblestone streets and the old stone houses.

Ayvalik is located north of Izmir on the Aegean Coast of Turkey, and it is from here that a ferry is available to the Island of Lesvos in Greece. Nearby is Alibey Adasi (Cunda Island), which boasts abandoned Greek churches, and small seaside restaurants on old stone houses.

Ayvalik and its stone houses are the living remnants of inhabitants who have been in the area since 330 B.C. There are 22 islands around Ayvalik. This island and its smaller islets were known to the Greeks as Hecatonnesi and were sacred to Apollo.

The island was given the name Alibey in recognition of Gen.

The First Geography Congress, which was convened in Ankara in 1941, at the conclusion of the research that had continued for a long time, separated Turkey into seven geographical regions. GENERAL VISA INFORMATION FOR BRITISH PASSPORT HOLDERS

British passport holders travelling to Turkey require visa. Visas can be obtained at the port of entry in Turkey or from the Turkish Consulate General in London or Turkish Diplomatic Missions in other countries.

Sticker type visas are issued at the port of entry and allow staying in Turkey for up to 90 days. It costs £10. If there is more than one person travelling on the same passport, each individual is liable to pay the visa fee. This type of visa does not permit to engage in paid or unpaid employment.

Those who wish to obtain entry visa from the Turkish Consulate in London should apply to the Consulate General. Visa fee is £40 and should be paid by postal order or cash only. A passport size picture should also be submitted during application.

It is compulsory to have a minimum of three months validity on your passport from the date of your entry into Turkey.

Travel document holders need to apply to the Consulate General in person with his/her travel document with a validity of at least 6 months, a passport size photo, fully filled application form, latest bank statement, a reference letter from his/her employer or school. The fee is 40 pounds sterling. All visas for travel document holders are single entry.

Forget the recession, live like a rock star in new hotel

London's newest hotelier Mark Fuller is showing commendable bravado for someone about to open a luxury hotel during a global recession.

"F*** the recession, let's get on with it," he says, while sitting on the roof terrace of the Sanctum Soho, a 30-room establishment dubbed the rock'n'roll hotel, as much for its "anything goes" service philosophy as the pedigree of its owners, which include the co-managers of heavy metal band Iron Maiden.

"We do not recognize there is a credit crunch because we believe you should battle through it," Fuller says, adding "If you get panicky and scary about things like this you're no man at all." Besides, he admits, three years ago when he started working on the concept of an 'alluring haven of hedonism' (as the hotel is described on its Web site), the credit crunch didn't exist.

And by the time it hit, it was too late to pull out. "We wouldn't do anyway," Fuller insists, adding "fortune favors the brave, as they say." The former band manager turned entrepreneur, is looking quite the rock star tonight, decked head-to-toe in black while a shiny silver skull stares ominously from his belt buckle.Downstairs, staff are frantically preparing for a launch party that promises to be heavy on champagne, cocktails and celebrities. It's almost like the crunch doesn't exist.This is Fuller's world and he's hoping plenty of people will want to join it. "In every downturn in the economic climate I think people look for some affordable glamour and escape," he says.Fuller also owns and runs the Embassy Hotel, an exclusive nightclub in the upmarket London suburb of Mayfair which he plans to franchise in Dubai, Istanbul and Abu Dhabi.The partners in his new hotel venture ooze rock credential: Iron Maiden co-managers Rod Smallwood and Andy Taylor.While Taylor has experience running a restaurant and hotel, "The Inn on the Green," Smallwood's experience in the hotel industry is based on 30 years on the road with Iron Maiden.Last year he stayed in 80 hotels in 40 countries and one of his biggest gripes is returning to his hotel after a gig and finding the bar is closed."You want good service, and you want the bars open, and you want good food available," he says from the roof terrace equipped with a bar and Jacuzzi he's taken to calling "my lounge."Smallwood expects to stay in the hotel once a week and says it will become a London bolt-hole for the band. While non-music types and the tone-deaf are welcome to stay in the hotel, over-enthusiastic groupies are not. "If you're on the road for three months, you can never escape," Smallwood says. "The fans, some of them, think they have a God-given right, just because they're staying in the same hotel, to put a camera in your face over your cornflakes."

"The rule here is no autographs and no photographs," he says firmly. "Say Paul Weller is sitting in the corner having a beer and you go and ask for an autograph or photograph, you will not stay here again."

Along with privacy and a beer at all hours, guests have access to an on-call guitar doctor, a necessity, apparently, if you break a string while strumming in your room. Guests who have inadvertently left their guitar at home can hire one from reception.

The rock star concept extends to the room decor. The silver wallpaper and mirrored columns may appear garish in daylight, but at 3am one suspects they add a touch of glamour.

Free standing baths are a bold leap from the bed and the mini bar is well-stocked with champagne. Rod Smallwood is confident the concept will work.

"Recession or no recession, we're talking about 30 rooms in a huge major city. If we can't sell 30 rooms in the depths of recession it means we're useless, and we know we're not."

Mark Fuller says he's selling more than a hotel room; in times of economic crisis the Sanctum Soho offers the chance to forget the mortgage and live like a rock star, if only for a day.

"You can sit in the restaurant and have a hamburger for seven pounds ($10)," he says. "The drinks are cheaper than most hotels, and probably cheaper than most nightclubs. The room accommodation runs everywhere from £125 ($255) straight up to £450 ($650). Take your pick. Cut your coat."

I mishear him. "Cut your coke?" I ask.

"No, you can't do that!" he exclaims.

"Musicians are not like that anymore," Fuller says. "The music industry is such now is that people release CDs to support tours not the other way around, so this is a professional state.

"I just don't want to be the hotel at the end of the tour, then I'm in danger," he laughs.

Fethiye liegt in einer malerischen Bucht, die sich am Übergang zwischen Riviera und Ägäis befindet und ist der südlichste Urlaubsort der türkischen Ägäis. Der bekannteste und schönste Strand von Fethiye ist die traumhafte Bucht Ölüdeniz. Ein Besuch von Ölüdeniz lohnt sich, auch wenn der Strand lange nicht so einsam ist, wie es manchmal die Werbeplakate versprechen. Der Tourismus, bildet den Hauptwirtschaftszweig, die meisten Hotelanlagen befinden sich im Vorort Calis und in Ölüdeniz.

Tagsüber kann man das Strandleben genießen. Entweder man liegt einfach nur in der Sonne oder man vertreibt sich mit diversen Sportmöglichkeiten die Zeit. Man kann beispielsweise Jetski oder Wasserski fahren sowie sich beim Paragliden die Bucht von Fethiye aus der Vogelperspektive anschauen. Mittags kann man sich in einem der zahlreichen Restaurants auf der Strandpromenade mit ein paar Snacks stärken. Sehr zu empfehlen sind auch die Bootsausflüge entlang der wunderschönen Küste. Man kann auf dem Sonnendeck liegen, ankert in den schönsten Buchten und kann dort beim Schnorcheln oder Tauchen die Unterwasserwelt erkunden. Aber auch die Küstenlandschaft, ist aeusserst sehenswert.

Ausflüge in die Umgebung lohnen sich auf jeden fall. In Fethiye selbst kann man sich die beeindruckenden Felsgräber anschauen. Verstreut über die Kernstadt befinden sich noch einige lykische Sarkophagen. Einer steht in einem Wohngebiet sogar mitten auf einer Straße (Foto oben!). Abends und nachts ist in Fethiye jede Menge was los. Die Altstadt ist sehr lebendig und wird hell beleuchtet. Nach einem ausgiebigen Abendessen kann man einen Bummel durch das Zentrum von Fethiye machen und sich dabei etwas zwischen den vielfältigen Angeboten der Geschäfte und Straßenverkäufer umsehen.

Because of the archaeological and natural riches of the area, Antalya is also known as the Turkish Riviera. The sun, sea, nature and history combine to form a very popular resort, highlighted by some of the cleanest beaches in the Mediterranean. The 630km shoreline of the province is liberally scattered with ancient cities, harbours, memorial tombs and beaches, secluded coves and lush forests, many of which are easily accessible from the city.
With its palm-lined boulevard, internationally-acclaimed marina, and old castle with traditional architecture, all set amidst a modern city, Antalya is a major tourist centre in Turkey. In addition to the wide selection of hotels, restaurants, bars, nightclubs and shops, the city also plays host to a number of sporting events throughout the year, like International Beach Volleyball, triathlon, golf tournaments, archery, tennis and canoeing competitions. The Cultural Centre, which opened in 1995, hosts cultural and art events in the fields of music, theatre, and creative arts. The main area of interest in the city is central old quarter within the Roman walls, known as Kaleici, and there are many good museums.
Districts: Akseki, Alanya, Elmali, Finike, Gazipasa, Gundogmus, Ibradi, Kale, Kas, Kemer, Korkutali, Kumluca, Manavgat and Serik are all towns in the province of Antalya.
Akseki
After Alanya, Akseki is the oldest district in the province of Antalya, and has an appearance that befits its location in the rugged Taurus mountains, in a forested and very rocky area. The history of Akseki extends back to the Roman era, when it was known as Marla (Marulya), and has been continually inhabited until the present day. The developments in the tourism sector in the Antalya region in recent years have been seen in Akseki as well. The area is well known for the snowdrop flower, and every years sees local and foreign visitors coming every winter to see these flowers breaking through the snow, as the first sign of spring.
In the Giden Gelmez Mountains, goats are protected and limited hunting is available year-round with the purchase of a license. Another spot frequented by visitors is the trout farming facilities in the villages of Sinan hoca and Gumusdamla. The primary game in the area is mountain goat, rabbit, bear and fox.
Other areas worth visiting are the Goktepe Highland, Giden Gelmez Mountains, Cimi Highland, Irmak Valley and the 340-metre deep Bucaklan Cave, which has only recently been discovered. Buildings of interest are the Ulu Camii and medreses.
Elmali
The exact founding date of Elmali, which is located within the borders of ancient Lycia, is unknown. Excavations to the east at Karatas near the village of Semahoyuk, and to the west in the village of Beyler indicate that the area has been inhabited seen the Bronze Age.
Throughout history it has suffered the rising and falling fortune of the Lycian region, being ruled respectively by the Persian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman empires.
Tumuluses There are several tumuluses in nearby villages. The first is west of the city in the village of Mugren, on top of which sits a small fortress dating back to the Roman era. Surface-level archaeological research indicates that the area was inhabited in the Bronze Age by various civilisations. Another village to the west, Semahoyuk, has a tumulus but due to the fact that an Ottoman cemetery is located on top of it, no research has been done. The third and largest tumulus is in Beyler, south of the city on the Elmali - Kas road. Excavations conducted here show that the area has been continuously inhabited from the Bronze Age right up to the present time. The items unearthed in the excavations are exhibited in the Antalya Museum.
East of the city 6 km from the village of Elmali near the village of Bayindir, there are several tumuluses side by side. Artifacts dating back to the 7th century BC were unearthed during the excavations. Now on display in a special section of the Antalya Museum, these findings represent a cross-section of life during that era. A statuette of pure silver and two of ivory bear witness to the fact that the art of sculpture in ancient Anatolia had reached a level of some sophistication.
Memorial Tombs There are tombs in Karaburun and Kizilbel. The walls of the King's Tomb in Karaburun, on the Antalya - Elmali road, is decorated with frescoes of scenes of hunting and war. The tomb in Kizilbel is west of the city on the Elmali - Yuvayol road, and is a single room made of limestone blocks.
Define Described as the Treasure of the Century, this was discovered in 1984, just north of the Antalya - Elmali road between the King's Tomb and the village of Gokpinar. Consisting of 190 pieces of ancient silver coins, the treasure was smuggled to America by antique treasure thieves. It is still on display in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts as part of a private collection. The Athens Decadrachme, 14 pieces each worth US$600,000, is said to be the world's most valuable treasure find.
Mosques The most interesting mosques in the area include Selcuklu Camii, Kutuk Camii, Sinan-i Ummi Camii, Omer Pasa Camii and medrese.
Korkuteli
Located 67 km from Antalya, Korkuteli is surrounded by Antalya on the east, Burdur to the north, Mugla to the southwest and Elmali and Kumluca to the south. The effects of the Mediterranean climate can be felt here in this region of lakes but the further one goes inland, the more continental the climate becomes with cold winters and hot summers.
3 km west of Korkuteli is the Alaaddin Mosque, only the door of which is still standing. In the same area is the Seljuk religious school which bears the name of its founde,r and was built by El Emin Sinaeddin of the Hamidogullari dynasty in 1319.
Gundogmus There are numerous ruins of ancient cities in the district of Gundogmus, 182 km from Antalya. The important ruins are those of Hagiasophia city, 7 km north of Guzel Bag Bucagi, but no excavations have been conducted here. There are also the ruins of Asar at Sumene (7 km from the city centre), Kese (2 km east of the village of Senir) and Gedfi (11 km southwest of Gundogmus).
Other places to visit in the area include the Cem Pasa Camii; the ruins on top of Sinek Mountain, 15 km east of the city centre between Gundogmus and Pembelik; and the ruins of Kazayir at Tasagir, on the Gundogmus - Antalya highway.
Gazipasa
Situated 180 km from Antalya, Gazipasa is a charming little town with a beach 10 km long, beautiful forests and turquoise blue coves. Iskele, the site of the Koru and Kahyalar beaches, is an important breeding ground of the caretta caretta turtles. Mostly undeveloped up until the present time, Gazipasa is on its way to being an attractive tourist centre with accommodation, recreation facilities, an airport and yacht harbour still under construction, as well as the natural and historical treasures of the area.
Antiocheia Ad Cragum 18 km east of Gazipasa, and within the village of Guney, these ruins gets its name from the Commagene King Antiochus IV, and are found on the three hills that stretch out towards the sea. It has the ruins of a castle dating back to the Roman and Byzantine era, a column-lined boulevard, agora, baths, victory arch, a church and the city necropolis. The barrel-vaulted memorial tombs with their pre-entrance porticoes are well preserved and reflect a style peculiar to the region.
Adanda (Lamos) This ancient city is located 15 km northeast of Gazipasa, and was founded 2 km north of the present-day village of Adanda, on top of a high and steep hill. It is a walled city with a large tower south of the city gate, and among the ruins are a fountain carved into the living rock and two temples. Other significant ruins are the tombs in the necropolis made of single pieces of carved stone. These remains are a good representation of the culture and art of the mountainous Cilician region.
Nephelis This ancient ruin can be reached by going through the village of Muzkent 12 km out on the Gazipasa-Anamur road and taking the gravel road south for about 5 km. The southern area is surrounded by the sea and steep cliffs. The city consists of the acropolis and the remains of dwellings spread out in an east-west fashion. The only standing structures date back to the Roman and Byzantine periods and include a Medieval Castle, a temple, a musical hall, irrigation system and the necropolis.
Selinus Located on the slopes southwest of Hacimusa Creek by Gazipasa Beach, the ancient city of Selinus is one of the most important cities in the mountainous Cilician region. On top of the hill is the acropolis as well as the walls and towers of a medieval castle, which are fairly well preserved. In the Acropolis, a church and cistern have survived the ravages of time. The other buildings of Selinus are near the beach and on the slopes, among which are the baths, agora, Islami Yapi (mansion), aqueducts and the necropolis. Most of the bones in the Alanya Museum were brought from the Necropolis and allow the workshop in the museum to exist.
Kumluca
Situated on the plane formed by the silt carried down from the mountains by Alakir Creek and Gavur Brook, Kumluca is surrounded by the towns of Finike and Elmali. In the upper reaches of Alakir Creek fed by the springs coming from Onemli Mountains and the Beydaglar Mountains, there are trout and striped mullet.
How to Get
By Road : Antalya is easily accessed from most parts of the country, and the main bus station (Yeni Garaj) is 4km north of the city centre. Major routes include Istanbul (12 hours), Fethiye (8 hours), Izmir (9 hours) and Goreme (10 hours). The best route from Istanbul and Ankara is through Afyon and Burdur. In addition to the large buses and long-distance journeys, which leave from the Sehirlerarasi Terminali, there are also dolmus services to places like Kas, Alanya, Olympos and Side, from the Ilceler Terminali, although these are not air-conditioned. Most bus companies have a free shuttle service from the bus station into the city centre.

By Boat : The marina is one of the most important in Turkey, and the Kaleici certainly one of the most photographed, lying at the foot of the old part of the city. Apart from private yachts sailing in from all over the world, there are passenger ferries to Girne (Northern Cyprus) and Rhodes.

MUSEUM, HISTORICAL AND CULTURAL ITEMS
Antalya Museum : Founded in 1922 by Süleyman Fikri Erten and housed first in the Alaaddin Mosque in the old city and then in the Yivli Minaret, the museum was later moved to its current location. The museum consists of 12 exhibit rooms and its gardens and open galleries. In these halls the history of Antalya is given in a chronological and instructive fashion starting with the first humans and continuing without interruption to the modern era.

Kaleici : Today the historical old city of Antalya known as Kaleici (the inner castle) is surrounded by two walls, most of which have fallen down. The inner wall encloses the harbour in a semicircle. As a result of restoration, Kaleici has turned into a major tourist centre with guest-houses, bars, shops and restaurants, and the Roman harbour has been turned into a modern, well-equipped marina. As a result of the restoration work, the Ministry of Tourism was awarded the Golden Apple (Tourism Oscar) in April 1984 by FIJET.

The City Walls : What remains today are a few bastions inside the city as well as Hadrian's Gate and its towers, the large tower facing the harbour and a few pieces of the harbour walls. One of the walls surrounds the yacht harbour and the other the city, almost like horseshoe. One of the remaining towers in the Castle Gate Square is now used as a clock tower. There are four gates in the city walls, which form entrances to the city.
Hadrian's Gate : The only city gate to have survived until the present day is the most attractive of the Pamphylia: Uckapilar (Three Gates), also known as Hadrian's Gate, which is guarded by one tower on either side. Built to honour the emperor Hadrian's visit to the city in 130 AD, the whole gate, except for the columns, is made of pure white marble. The reliefs and carvings are extraordinary.
Old Houses of Antalya : With its hot summers and mild winters, the houses in Antalya are designed to provide protection not against the chill of winter but against the merciless heat of summer. The stone overhangs and courtyards help provide air circulation. The houses in Antalya can be divided into three types based upon the design of the main hall, which also serves as a storage area. The three types are I halls, L halls and U halls. In the design of these houses, great attention was paid to meeting the necessities of daily life, while also providing harmony with nature and the environment. Perge : Situated 18 km east of Antalya, Perge is in the city limits of Aksu Bucagi. Because of its location on the Cilicia - Pisidia road, it was a vital part of the province of Pamphylia, and was founded around the same time as the other cities in the area (7th century BC). It was an important city for Christians of Perge who had worshipped the mother goddess Artemis. St. Paul and Barnabas visited the city and wealthy benefactors like Magna Plancia had a number of important memorials built here.
The first excavations began in 1946 by Istanbul University and they resulted in many important discoveries: The theatre consists of three main sections: the seating, orchestra and stage. It held 12,000 spectators, with 19 rows of seats on the lower section, 23 on the top section, and a 52-metre stage.
The stadium measures 34 square metres, with 13 rows of seats on top of the vaults. The eastern and western sides have 30 vaults each and the northern side has 10. For every three vaults there is an entrance to the stadium, and the other two were used as shops.
The Agora was the commercial and political centre of the city, with shops surrounding the central courtyard, some of which have mosaics on the floor. The agora measured 76 square metres, with a circular structure in the centre with a diameter of 13.40 metres.
The colonnaded boulevard lies between the Hellenistic Gate and the nympheum on the slopes of the acropolis. On both sides of the street, 20 metres in width, are porticoes, some up to five meters high, behind which are shops. The street is divided into two by a 2-metre wide water canal running through the middle.
Other structures include the necropolis, city walls, gymnasium, Roman Baths, memorial fountain and the Greek and Roman gates.
Termessos : The ruined city of Termessos, lying 34km west of Antalya in a rugged mountain valley, was founded by the Solymi people, from the interior of Anatolia. Among the important remains are the 4200-seat theatre and the Roman stele that Augustus had built at the beginning of the first century AD. The Odeon, the covered meeting hall, has seating for 600 people. The five inter-connecting underground cisterns were used for the storage of water and olive oil.
Other important remains include the Agora, with an open western side and other sides colonnaded; the heroic memorial of Hereon on top of a 6-metre high platform; the Corinthian-style temple, the Temple of Zeus, the Lesser and Greater Temples of Artemis, the gymnasium and the watch towers. In addition, there are more than 1200 rock tombs.
Olympos : Lying between Kemer and Adrasan is the ancient harbour village of Cirali, the ruins of Olympos and the site of the Chimaera. The history of Olympos dates back to the 2nd century BC when it was an important Lycian city, although it was empty by the 6th century. The Olympians worshipped Hephaestos (Vulcan) the god of fire, probably connected to the eternal flame, or Chimaera, which still emerges from the mountain. Known also as Yanartas (burning stone), the flame is caused by the burning of natural gas emerging from the mountain. Apart from the ruins, Olympos is well known for its simple treehouse camps, where most tourists stay, and a natural environment thanks to forests and vineyards near to a beautiful beach.
Ariassos : The ancient remains of Ariassos, around 50km from Antalya, are located on a slope and contain baths and rock tombs.
Phaselis : On the coast, 60km south of Antalya, Phaselis was founded by the Rhodians in the 7th century BC, and was known as the most important seaport in Eastern Lycia. On the west of the city is Hadrian's Gate, with shops and baths on either side. The city is accessible both by road and sea.
Limyra : Believed to have been in existence since the 5th century, Limyra is still in existence despite a massive earthquake in the mid 19th century although was emptied in the 7th and 9th centuries after the Arab invasions. The city, which is 11km south, composes of three section; the acropolis, areas of settlement, and necropolis.
Arycanda : Excavations of this city reveal that it probably existed from the 5th century BC, and controlled much of the Arycanda valley. Having survived a destructive earthquake in 240 AD, the city maintained its prominence until the 11th century, and its most important structures still survive today.
Demre (Myra) : Demre was one of the most important cities of the Lycian civilisation. 25km west of Finike and 48km east of Kas, Demre was a place of settlement from the 5th century BC. The city was deserted in 9 A.D after the invasions of the Arabs. Rock tombs, theatres and the Church of St. Nicholas (said to be the original Santa Claus) are the most interesting sites in the town today.
Simena (Kale) : Receiving its beauty from its history, sea and sun, Simena is accessible from Ucagiz. The submerged city and the ancient remains at the opposite island of Kekova island, make it a worthwhile trip. There are traces of Roman and other civilisations in Simena, the history of which dates back to Lycian civilisation. There is a small theatre carved into the rock, and Roman city walls.

How to Get
Connection of Manavgat province with other centers is only maintained by road. Bus companies within province are maintaining transportation to other cities and provinces from Antalya at west and Alanya at east. Bus companies in Manavgat and Side coaching station, are increasing their bus voyages according to tourist number, which increases during summer months. Alternative minibus voyages are organized from province to Manavgat Waterfalls, Side, Sorgun like visitable places.

Waterfall, which are 3 km. north of Manavgat province, have the same name with province. It composes a valuable to see panorama with its high flow on a wide area although it falls from an amazing height. Just near to the waterfalls, you can picnic in the nature and can eat fresh fish in surrounding restaurants.

Side Museum
Hamam of the antic agora, remaining from 5th and 6th century A. D., against the agora, which belongs to Roman Period, is restored on 1960 / 61, and turned into a museum.
Most of the pieces of art exhibited within the Museum, are the findings revealed during the excavations performed between 1947 and 1967 in Side antic city by Prof. Dr. Arif Müfid Mansel. From Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantium Period; inscriptions, gun relieves, Statues, torsos, tombs, portraits, ostotexes, amphorae, altars, tomb stalls, column heads and column pedestals, which are the copies of Greek originals, built in Roman Period, are being exhibited.
ANTIQUE CITIES
Side
Side, which is 7 km. away from Manavgat, is an ancient settlement center. Side, which is mentioned by historians as founded on 1405 A. D., had met with the reigns of Lydian, Persian, Alexander The Great's, Antiogonous's, Ptolemaioses, respectively beginning from the second half of VIth century A. D. After 215 A. D., The city, which is improved under supervision of Syrian Kingdom, and turned into a science and cultural center, had left to Bergama Kingdom on A. D. with Apameia peace, then had protected its independence with Eastern Pamphilya region, and reached to a great richness and prosperity with a huge commercial fleet.
It entered under Byzantium reign after Roman reign after 78 B. C. Side, which was a Bishop center during Vth and VIth centuries, had lived its greatest times during these years. Main gate of the city, which has a unique labor, is between two towers. There are two main streets in Side province. These streets are samples of columned streets of Ancient Age. After passing city gate, flat stones adorned area is the starting point of this street. There are columned porticos beside both sides of these streets, and shops behind them.
There is a "Nymphaeum", biggest historical fountain of Anatolia, against city gate, outside ramparts. A wide pool place is below this foundation. You can reach to a monumental structure, passing through a street after theater. This building with dimensions of 100x100 m., is an agora. Agora, which is the Bazaar area of the city, is surrounded by porticos and there are shops at three sides of it. There is a Gymnasium, surrounded by porticos and composed of three halls, on the street, south side of the Agora. In the main street at North - south direction, there is an arched structure, constructed during Roman Period. Importance of Side city's theater, in connection with architecture, is its construction on arched places instead of a slope of a hill like other roman theaters.
Theater, which is composed of three divisions, cavea, orchestra and scene, is the biggest and most monumental one among Pamphylia theaters, and has a capacity of 20.000 spectators.
There are wide cemeteries outside of Side's ramparts, and most important one of these, Western Necropolis, is 1,5 km. away. There are also temples and aqueducts in Side. Most important ones of the temples are Athena, Apollon and Men temples. Water of side is brought from Dumanlı source, within Oymapınar Dam Lake, approximately 25 km. away. This water transportation system is composed of ten aqueducts, of which some of them are two layered. Biggest one is near to Oymapınar and has 40 specs.
A huge Roman Hamam is turned into a museum, and hosts for most beautiful archeological pieces of art collection of the region. The city, which is reigned by Seljukians during XIIIth century, Hamitoğulları and Tekelioğulları during XIVth century, and finally Ottoman Empire during XVth century, was not a settlement during this period.
Although most parts of the city ramparts, which are holding structure and characteristics of Roman and Byzantium periods, has been demolished today, nearly all of the ramparts at land side had remained.
